On September 9, 2025, the American Turkish Friendship Association (ATFA) in Chantilly, Virginia, launched the first session of the United Against Hate series — a four-part multifaith program on hate crime awareness and prevention.
A Community Gathering for Respect and Safety
The evening began with a shared dinner and conversation, bringing together faith leaders, community members, and civic partners from across Northern Virginia. This welcoming environment encouraged personal connections and set the stage for meaningful dialogue.
Expert Presentation on Hate Crime Prevention
Officers from the Fairfax County Police Department led an informative session on the definitions, trends, and laws related to hate crimes, as well as strategies for prevention and community response. Their presentation gave participants practical knowledge to recognize and address bias incidents.
Group Discussions and Listening Sessions
Participants joined in small-group discussions to explore current challenges, share experiences, and suggest practical solutions. A listening session followed, where community representatives spoke openly about discrimination and bias they have encountered. These stories highlighted both the urgency of the issue and the resilience of diverse communities.
Atmosphere of Unity and Respect
The atmosphere was filled with warmth, trust, and solidarity. Attendees demonstrated a strong willingness to stand together against hate, respectfully listen to one another, and learn from diverse perspectives.
Looking Ahead
This was only the beginning. The United Against Hate series will continue with three more sessions in January, April, and July 2026, each building on the foundation of interfaith cooperation, community dialogue, and hate crime prevention education.
ATFA remains committed to fostering mutual understanding, inclusion, and peace through ongoing programs that bring together people of all faiths and backgrounds to strengthen community bonds in Northern Virginia and beyond.
